Introduction
A word from the Local Training Manager - Jim Berry
Here we hope to clarify all the information you will need to understand Adult Training in Hornchurch.
One of the largest areas of support that we offer to adults is training, providing you with the skills that you need for the role that you wish to undertake.
"Getting Started" and the 36 Modules.
Below is a guide to the Training and a download of the MATRIX which will give you an idea of the different modules, aims, topics and how you can study them .
Download the Matrix here. You will need Adobe Acrobat to view this matrix.
Roles in the Matrix
Section Leader
A Section Leader is exactly that – there's no distinction whether it's a Beaver Leader, a Cub Leader, and Assistant Cub Leader, an Assistant Scout Leader or an Explorer Scout Leader. If you work directly with young people, then you are a Section leader.
Roles in the Matrix
Section Assistant
A Section Assistant is an adult who helps a Section leader and works directly with young people. A Section Assistant is required to undertake some training and to validate the Getting Started Modules 1 Essential Information and 3 Tools for the job (Section Leaders)
Roles in the Matrix
Manager
A Manager is someone who has a direct line responsibility – so that's a Group Scout leader, District Explorer Scout Commissioner, District Commissioner or County Commissioner.
Roles in the Matrix
Section Supporter
A Section Supporter is someone who supports a section within a scouting district or county – so that's for example the Assistant District Commissioner (ADC) Scouts, Assistant County commissioner (ACC) Cubs, or ADC Beavers. Generally speaking they don't directly manage Leaders. They are not managers. These supporters have a wealth of knowledge and can help you in your role.
Roles in the Matrix
Other Supporters
Other supporters are those who perform supporting roles but don't directly have a link to a Group e.g. ADC Activities, ACC International
Roles in the Matrix
Others
Finally, ‘others' is exactly that – anyone not in any of the above. So that includes trainers, presenters, course directors, but also Group Treasurers, District Chairman etc. Everyone needs to undertake some training – the minimum is Module 1: Essential Information (which can be done in the comfort of your own home).
Methods of Training
Methods of Training include :
E-learning (uses the Internet.), Video, Course, One-to-one, Small group and Workbook.
Either before you begin "Getting Started" or shortly afterwards you will meet with your Training Adviser who will explain the training scheme in more detail. In this District, Training Advisers tend to be allocated to one or more Groups.Your GSL will provide information about who are the trainers for your group.
The Training Adviser's job is to help you identify which of the modules you need to complete and then decide with you whether you need to complete any training for them. Between you, you will complete a personal learning plan. Further information on the modules requirements can be found in the information section, together with copies of Personal Learning Plans.
Need to know more...
I have included a link to the GLNE website which gives even more detail on the training and the timescale for new leaders etc. This saves duplicating information.
