Young Leaders

Welcome to the Young Leaders Unit

Welcome to the Young Leaders website. This has all the information and contact numbers you will need to register, up date course information, mentoring session dates, unit activities and allow you to ask questions.

Below is an overview of the scheme within Hornchurch District

The Young Leaders' Scheme is just one of the exciting programme elements in the Explorer Scout section. If you are between the ages of 14 and 18 and help at a Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts or the Scout Section you must be register with an Explorer Scout Young Leaders' Unit as there are minimum requirements as laid down in POR (Policy Organisation and Rules) to protect youth members and the adults they work with. Explorer Scouts who choose to devote a large proportion of their time in Scouting to service in another section must complete Module A of the scheme. This ensures that some basic safeguarding training has been done.

The Young Leaders' Scheme helps Explorer Scouts to develop and grow as individuals. It allows them to make a valuable contribution to their community and give service to others. The scheme also helps them fulfil the service elements of their awards.

The Young Leaders Unit is based at District HQ and meets as per the calender for mentoring sessions which all Young Leaders are advised to attend. We also run training dates at some of the District activities as well as a YL training weekend in February.

All YLs are Explorers and are the responsibility of the District. All Explorers are members of an Explorer Unit which includes the Young Leaders Unit. By the nature of the scheme these young people help in sections across many Groups. It is the responsibility of the GSL and section Leader to ensure that the young person helping them is also looked after themselves as they are still a youth member. We aim to assist GSLs by having a placement agreement with the Groups that have Young Leaders. This is not to be confused with a partnership agreement. The agreement ensures that all adults working with Young Leaders, D of E and other youth help have had either a basic level of training and or understand the scheme and can support their Young Leader accordingly. Each Group has a support pack available with helpful notes in along with additional support of the new on-going training module aimed at providing leaders with more in depth information concerning the scheme and how their leadership team can encourage their YL to reach their full potential.

Module A Badge

The Young Leader's Module A Badge is awarded after completion of Module A - Prepare for Take Off of the Young Leaders' Scheme. The Module A is the only compulsory element along with registration with the Young Leader's Unit and this must be completed within three months of becoming a Young Leader.
